Experience
I was raised on a farm in Missouri, so my love of mathematics and science comes from growing up experiencing the practical application of these disciplines. In elementary school, I really enjoyed our "bean in a cup" science class experiment, and that interest in growing plants stayed with me through high school, when I maintained a small greenhouse that helped feed my family. Although farming and gardening are hobbies for many people, I saw it as an applied approach to using scientific processes to help produce better results from plants. As an educator, I've seen how working on the practical side of these subjects helps students better understand the underlying concepts, because abstract ideas become real. For many students who have struggled with these subjects, that simple change in perspective leaves them with a new appreciation for the subject, so they want to study more. I love to solve problems, and I want to pass that on to my students. I received a bachelor's degree from Northwest Missouri State University in Chemistry, and I am currently earning my Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology, focusing on microalgal cultivation. I can teach elementary through high school students math, chemistry, physics, college test preparation, and essay writing.
